Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons granulated sugar
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons shortening (Crisco works great!)
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the self-rising flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Cut in Shortening: Add the shortening to the flour mixture and cut it in until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Buttermilk: Pour in the buttermilk and stir gently with a spoon until combined. Avoid kneading the dough!
- Shape the Biscuits: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Pat or roll it out to about 1 inch thick. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out your biscuits.
- Prepare for Baking: Place the biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet, making sure they touch each other for soft sides. Brush the tops with a little extra buttermilk for a golden finish.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown on top.
